Building A Skin Care Routine for Your Body

Building A Skin Care Routine for Your Body

When it comes to skin care, we tend to pay more attention to the face than we do to the body. However, the body can benefit from a solid skin care routine just as much as the face. While your body may not be as exposed throughout the day, the skin below your neck is still vulnerable to the sun, pollution, and other factors that can cause premature aging, sagging, and hyperpigmentation.  Especially during the dry winter months, its a good idea to show your skin some extra TLC. Here are the simple steps to follow to build a full-body skin care routine for healthy, glowing, and hydrated skin all year long.

5-Step Full-Body skin care Routine

1. Cleanse

Though most of us will go to great lengths to avoid putting harsh ingredients on our faces, well use the same ingredients on our bodies without a second thought. Alcohol, strong fragrances, and detergents are drying to skin and can leave behind residues that prevent your moisturizer from doing its job, so stick to a gentler body wash. Some people like to use the products made specifically for babies that can be found at the drugstore, because they use the gentlest formulas while still giving a good clean. When choosing a body wash, look for moisturizing ingredients instead, like honey or shea butter. If youre prone to breakouts on susceptible areas like the chest, neck, and back, look for a body wash containing alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), which exfoliate and clarify the skin.

2. Exfoliate

When it comes to exfoliating, there are plenty of options to choose from. You can opt for products containing chemical exfoliants, like the AHAs and BHAs mentioned above. Alternatively, you can use a physical exfoliant like a body scrub, loofah, or dry brush. Body scrubs contain grainy ingredients that help slough off dead skin, but use them sparingly, since they tend to be aggressive compared to other options. Dry brushing is a popular option these days, for both its exfoliating abilities and for improving circulation. If youre a fan of lymphatic massage, this may be the best addition to your skin care routine.

3. Moisturize

For the body, you can probably use heavier formulas than you would for your face. Choose creams with hyaluronic acid and ceramides, which help to seal in hydration. Beyond that, you can look for lotions that contain ingredients catering to specific concerns, like retinol to prevent aging. For this step, the most important consideration is when you do it. Moisturizing right after you shower is best, because it locks in hydration and delivers active ingredients when the skin is primed and ready.

4. Oils

Youre probably already familiar with using occlusives as part of your nightly skin care routine for face. Simply put, an occlusive is a product, usually oil-based, that seals in all those healthy ingredients from your serums and moisturizers and protects from outside factors like pollution and harmful free radicals. Some people like to use coconut oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oilthere are a ton of options. If youre worried about the heavier oils transferring to your clothes, heres a tip: Pat yourself all over with your damp towel from showering after youve applied the oil to your skin.

5. Sun Protection

Perhaps the most important step of all is sun protection. You should apply sunscreen anywhere your skin will be exposed, and it doesnt hurt to apply it under your clothing, too. As long as you choose an SPF of 30 or higher, youre protected and your skin will thank you for many years to come.
